about e j k cashmere

Where does cashmere come from?
Each e j k sweater is composed of the ultra fine moulted under hair of at least three cashmere goats. The goats roam the harsh climates and desolate plains of Inner Mongolia where their precious hair protects them from extreme 40° sub-zero climates. Nomadic farmers comb out the moulting hair during the summer and this soft under hair is then sent to Loro Piana, one of Italy's top cashmere spinners, to be refined into yarn.

How does it get made?
With exacting skills acquired over the centuries, the spinners separate only the purest warmest layer of fine goat hair, nearest the goat's skin, from the long rough hairs. This is how cashmere is graded in terms of quality. The top yarn spinners have cultivated this skill to near perfection and this is what differentiates Loro Piana cashmere from the run of the mill cashmere, as seen on the high street. More often than not cheaper cashmere has other fibres and synthetics added to it, which while making the garment appear superficially soft, have a poorer drape, quality, colour and warmth compared to pure cashmere.

Once the fine hair has been separated it is carefully dyed in specially selected rich, seasonal colours and spun into the different thicknesses each e j k design requires. The cashmere designs are knitted to their specifications and individually hand-finished with their unique detailed trims. Finally, the garments are washed in exceptionally soft, pure water, then pressed, wrapped and sent to e j k in London.
